What is Plan Text Search?
The Omni Search bar on the 'Plans' tab allows you to search for vector text on your plans - the results are displayed as their own category, including the total count of matches of your search term on the plan(s), in addition to any plan sheet numbers/descriptions, file names, or task titles that match that search term.
Quickly and easily search for search terms across plans to identify specific room names or numbers, measurements, or callout details. You can also search for text on individual plans to isolate specific instances of the text or determine the total number of mentions.
What text is searchable?
Any Vector or TrueType text on plans can be searched. Using vector, or TrueType font in AutoCAD or Bluebeam (or any other tool used to create plans) will ensure that the text placed on a plan is searchable. Take a look at this article, How should I format my Plan Files for Fieldwire?, on exactly how to format your plan PDFs to take full advantage of our automatic plan scanning features, including plan text search.
Note: Annotations and markups made with the plan markup toolbar in Fieldwire are not searchable. The search is only for vector text on PDF plans.
How to search for text across multiple Plans
To locate a piece of text on multiple plans, use the search bar on the 'Plans' tab - this will search across every plan in the project. The sections below show how to do this on the web and mobile versions of Fieldwire, respectively.
Note: In order to search for plan text, either across multiple plans or on a single sheet, you will need to enter a string of text that has more than one character. For example, searching for 'A' will not return results, but 'A1' or 'AA' would return search results, as long as that text appears on at least one plan.
On Web
On the Web version of Fieldwire (app.fieldwire.com), any user can search for text on multiple plans from the 'Plans' tab. Enter your search term in the Omni Search bar.
In addition to matching Plan sheet numbers/descriptions, File names, and Task titles, the Omni Search results will display the number 'mentions' of your search term on all the plans where it appears:
Click 'Show More' to display up to 15 plans with matching text*
Please email support@fieldwire.com if you have a use case that requires more than 15 plan results. We’re constantly iterating based on user feedback and would love to hear more about how you use Fieldwire!
If you search for a string that shares a name with any plan, then the matching portion of the plan name will be bolded and the number of mentions on the plan itself will be highlighted yellow:
Click on any of the search results to jump to the plan itself:
On Mobile
On the Mobile versions of Fieldwire (iOS is pictured below, however, there’s no difference in functionality on Android) any user can search for text on multiple plans from the 'Plans' tab. Select the magnifying glass to open the search bar, then enter a search term:
Each plan that contains the search term is displayed, with a yellow banner that indicates the number of mentions of the text. Open the plan to identify the specific location(s) of that text on the plan.
Note: Offline plan text search is supported on mobile from version 1.49.0 and forward. In order for the Plan Text Search to work, all content has to be downloaded to your device. If you are having issues with your content syncing, review this article: Troubleshooting syncing issues on an iOS device & Troubleshooting syncing issues on Android device.
Search for text on a single sheet
If you'd like to see exactly where any string of text appears on a single plan, you can do so directly from the Plan itself by leveraging the Plan text search bar. The sections below show how to do this on Fieldwire Web and Mobile, respectively.
On Web
Open any individual plan from the 'Plans' tab of your Project to search for a string of text on the plan. Click the magnifying glass icon, and enter the text you would like to search for. You can even use a keyboard shortcut to open the plan text search bar. The keyboard shortcut is pressing the 'f' key.
Every full and partial match of your, two-character, search term on the plan is highlighted yellow, and the first (alphanumeric) match closest to the top of the page is highlighted orange.
In the example below, there are 17 total matches for '1-1'on the plan. The first match (highlighted orange) is closest to the top of the page, and additional matches descend down the page (highlighted yellow):
When searching for text within a plan sheet you can hit the “Enter” key on Windows or the “Return” key on Mac to have Fieldwire select and zoom in to the highlighted text. After this has been done you can navigate to the other matched text entries by clicking on the left or right “Arrows” next to the search bar or use the “Enter” or the “Return” key to see other matched text entries.
If there is an exact, 1:1 match of your search term on the plan, then the associated text on the plan is highlighted orange:
On Mobile
To search for text on a single plan (iOS is pictured below, but the feature works the exact same on Android as well), open any plan from the 'Plans' tab, then select the magnifying glass to open the search bar. Enter a search term, then select the blue 'enter' button:
If there are multiple full or partial matches of your search term on the plan, the first( alphanumeric) match closest to the top of the page is highlighted orange, while all additional matches are highlighted yellow.
In the example below, there are 17 total matches of the search term 'Daylight', on the plan. The first match (highlighted orange) is closest to the top, and the additional text matches descend down the page (highlighted yellow):
Click the left and right arrow options to jump between matches:
