Overview
Viewing and marking up plans is an integral Fieldwire feature. Leverage markups for as-builts, to designate specific work areas, and to track progress.
Everyone on your Fieldwire project can view the same public markups on your plans whether they’re logging in through the Fieldwire website or our mobile apps. Markups are also going to be automatically carried over to new versions of plans when you upload them, so you’ll be able to keep a history of when the markups were added.
This article speaks about leveraging markups on the mobile version of Fieldwire.
- Subscriptions: Basic, Pro, Business, and Business Plus
- Permissions: Project Admins and Members can create public and private markups, Project Followers can only create Private Markups. For more information about project permissions, check out these articles: Introduction to Project Permission Levels: Administrators, Members, and Followers, What can I do as a Project Follower?
- Platforms: iOS/Android, but is the same on the web. (For more information about the web, check out this article: Plan View and Markup Tools (Web)).

The Plan View
After the Plans have been uploaded to the contingent projects, you'll be able to view them on the mobile version of Fieldwire, specifically under the 'Plans' tab. Select one of the plan tiles to open up the Plan View:
Note: The Blue Number in the bottom-right corner of the Plan tile indicates the number of Tasks on the plan itself; you can adjust the category selection to display tasks that are associated with that particular category.
If you are on an iPhone, your plans will be displayed in a list view -
If you are using an Android device, your plans will display as thumbnails -
View Older Versions
To view the older versions of the plan, swipe up-- there is a watermark in the middle of the page to indicate that this is an Outdated Version:
You can also change the version you are looking at, or compare the versions (or other plans), by selecting the version selector in the bottom-left corner:
Note: The option to compare a plan is available to projects covered under the Pro and Business subscriptions.
Share a Plan
When viewing an individual plan sheet on your mobile device, you can click on the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner, which provides you with options on how to share that plan with others. You can leverage the 'Export PDF' option to download a PDF version of the plan, or 'Share [a] crop plan' of the sheet. In addition, you can 'Share [a] plan link'.
Choosing 'Share plan link' will bring up several different apps, one of which in the example below is 'Gmail'. You can also choose to send the plan link via other methods including other mail or messaging apps.
Once you've selected the app, such as Gmail, you'll be redirected to where you can email a direct link to the plan sheet. Keep in mind though that the person(s) you send the link to will need access to your Fieldwire project in order to view the plan sheet.
Note: On iOS, to access these options, you will need to click on the 'Share' button highlighted in the screenshot below.
The Markup toolbar
Select the arrow icon in the bottom-right corner to extend the markup toolbar, Project Admins and Members will be able to see all of the markup tools:
Project followers have access to tasks and can create private markups:
Note: Photos attached directly to plans, forms, and RFIs can now be marked up. To delete the markup, you need to press on the markup, itself, on the photo, and there will be a message popup, just as if you were trying to delete a message from a task on mobile.
Tasks
Tasks are a neutral, transparent way to document questions, observations, and issues that need to be addressed in a visible and straightforward manner. You can create Tasks directly from the markup toolbar and drop them in specific locations on your plans:
The right side-bar allows you to view all of the tasks associated with the plan; you can filter the tasks by category, assignee, or status, and you can sort the tasks by common attributes. In addition, if you'd like to have a task be associated with a plan, but not necessarily 'pinned' to an area on the plan, you can leverage the plus icon in the top right-hand corner to create a task here:
Note: The shape of the task is indicative of its association with a plan. The task 'pins' means the tasks are associated with a specific location on the plan. Whereas a 'diamond' task means the task is associated with a sheet, but not necessarily associated with a specific location on a plan.
Note: With Nested Locations, locations are ordered in the context of other nested locations, as opposed to grouping locations together by similar names. (For more information about Nested Locations, check out this article: Nested Locations).

Attachments
The link tool allows you to add hyperlinks to plans, photos, files, and forms directly on the desired plan:
Note: Progress photos are just for documentation purposes. If there’s an issue or action item that needs to be followed up on or you’re tracking completion, add a task that includes photos instead. Like photo hyperlinks, tasks can contain as many images as you want.
The first option is to add a link to another plan sheet.
The second option, the camera icon, allows you to attach a photo to your plan sheet
Note: On the mobile version of Fieldwire, you cannot link an already existing photo from the Photos tab to the plan sheet through this method. However, you are able to take photos through the camera on your mobile device indicated by the camera icon in the picture highlighted above. Those photos are then stored in the Photos tab in Fieldwire. (For more information about the Photos tab, check out this article: The Photos Tab).
The third option, the paperclip icon, allows you to attach files to your plan sheets. By selecting this option, you are able to add new and existing Files to your plan sheets.
By selecting "New File", you'll be able to upload a pdf file from your device or Box / Dropbox / Google Drive, if you have them linked with Fieldwire.
By selecting "Existing File", you'll be able to choose from the list of files that you already have in your Files tab on Fieldwire.
The fourth option, the clipboard icon, allows you to attach Forms to your plan sheets, if you are a Business Plan user.
When you add the icon to the plan sheet, you are able to choose between adding a New Form or using an already Existing Form. By choosing New Form, you'll then be prompted to choose which form template you would like to use, and then you can create and fill out a new form.
If you choose "Existing Form", you'll be able to attach any forms that have been created and are already in the Forms tab.
Markups
Leverage the markup tools to create freeform lines and highlights in various thicknesses and colors. You can also add straight lines, a multi-line, or arrows. You can also add a variety of shapes, including clouds, rectangles, circles, and a multi-line shape tool:
Whenever you leverage a straight line, multi-line, or arrow, you'll be able to leverage a magnifier to ensure that your markups are accurate:
You can also add Text Markups to add notes on the plans:
Admins and Members can also long-press on specific markups to view and modify it's 'Details', which include the markup creator and the option to adjust the color and thickness if it's a straight line or scribble markup. If it's a Text markup, you can also adjust the color, thickness, font size, or even the text itself:
Admins and Members can also opt to duplicate or resize these markups as well.
Note: Project Followers are only able to adjust the details or duplicate / resize their own private markups. Read more about that in this article: What can I do as a Project Follower?
Undo Markups
Recently created Markups can be removed by clicking the undo button. Clicking this will immediately delete the last markup you made on the plan during the current session.
Markup Symbols
Fieldwire now gives users the option to add markup symbols to their Plans on their iOS and Android mobile devices!
iOS:
Android:
This new feature is available to all users, and the markup symbols are separated into these categories: Audiovisual, Electrical, Fire Suppression, Geometric Symbols, and Security. To use the markup symbols, click on the icon highlighted in the bottom-left of the screenshot below, choose which category you'd like, pick a symbol, and click on the plan sheet to place the symbol. Keep clicking anywhere on the plan to continue adding the symbol!
iOS:
Android:
Note: For information about Markup Symbols on Web, please check out our article here!
A few more items to note regarding Markup Symbols:
- At this time, you cannot create custom symbols. We added the Geometric Shapes category so that you can add these shapes as placeholders/generic symbols. We have started with a small library of symbols, and we are open to requests to add more! If you'd like to see more symbols added, please send an email to support@fieldwire.com with an example of the symbol. We look forward to hearing what other symbols should exist in Fieldwire!
- Markup symbols are only on plans, not photos.
Measurements
Fieldwire will automatically calibrate your plan when you upload it if it’s a vector or text-based PDF with a scale on it. You can also manually calibrate your plans by leveraging the 'Protractor' tool. Once the plan is calibrated, you can leverage the area and length measurement tools to add measurements to your plan:
In addition, you can use the multi-line measurement tool which allows you to measure paths, perimeters, or other continuous multi-point lines.
Once you've added the markup, please make sure to click on the green checkmark shown in the screenshot below to confirm the markup, otherwise the markup will not save (only on Android). You do not need to do this confirmation step on iOS devices.
When you create an area or distance measurement, you'll be able to leverage the magnification tool to ensure these will be accurate:
Note: If you only see the protractor tool when you click on the measurement tool, that means that your plan has not been calibrated, so, you'll need to leverage the 'Protractor' tool to scale over a known dimension to calibrate the plan.
Color selector
Leverage the color selector to change the color of your markups. A lot of users tend to use specific colors to indicate notes for specific trades, or to indicate specific work areas:
Note: Project Followers will only be able to leverage Private Markups.
Move and Delete
When the 'Move' or 'Delete' tools are selected, you can naturally, move, or 'Delete' the specific markups. Please note, that when the 'Delete' option is selected, and a markup is deleted, there is no way to retrieve it, so take caution when leveraging the 'Delete' tool:
'Press and Hold' on Pinned Tasks & Markups
When accessing a plan sheet on your mobile device, it is possible to "press and hold" on pinned tasks and on certain markups on the plan to view a menu of action options.
'Press and Hold' on Markups
When you press and hold on certain markups, including Highlighter, Line, and Shape markups, you will see a menu of options. Those options include: 'Details', 'Duplicate', 'Move/Resize', and 'Delete'.
Shape Fill
Fieldwire allows you to fill in your shape markups. By pressing and holding on shape markups, you will see the 'Details' option. After clicking 'Details', you'll see the toggle to "Fill". To enable the shape fill, you simply need to click the toggle. After clicking the toggle, the shape will be a solid color, but you can make it more transparent by changing the Opacity percentage. The lower the percentage, the more transparent (less opaque) the shape will be.
In addition to filling the shape, by clicking on 'Details', you can change the color as well as see markup details such as "Created by", "Created on", "Last modified by" and "Last modified on".
Filter Markups
Once you have a lot of tasks and markups on your plans, you might want to have the option to see a completely clean version or view only certain layers, aka colors, of markups. You’ll see an eye icon in the top-left corner, which lets you do exactly that:
Deselect the ‘All Layers’ box to view your plan without all markups hidden, or select the particular task types, markup colors, and link types, that you’d like to see.
