Overview & Background
One of the biggest challenges of 2D plans is the inability to measure real-world distances.
By default, most plans do not indicate height measurements. X and Y measurements between Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and architectural elements in 2D plans are difficult to measure because the pertinent disciplines are on different sheets.
Fieldwire's BIM measurement tool helps accurately measure height and distances between all model elements
The measurement tool allows you to measure the X, Y, Z distances between two points you add to the model. The units that are displayed in each model (whether it’s feet/inches or meters) are determined by the model itself. If the model was exported with imperial or metric units, the measurements will be displayed in Feet and fractional inches (0’0”) or meters (m), respectively.
Create a Measurement
To create a Measurement, open a 3D Model from the '3D Models' tab.
1. Select the 'Measurement' tool.
Note: All project permission levels (admin, members, and followers) can access the measurement tool.
2. Click on the first point you'd like to measure from. Measurements are calculated dynamically as you move your mouse. Click on the second point on the model to create the measurement.
Note: If your mouse hovers over the background while measuring the second point, it will automatically be anchored to the closest model edge.
Note: The measurement menu and guidelines take visual precedence on the model until it is removed. You can navigate around the model and the measurement you added will remain static:
Clear a Measurement
There are a few different ways to clear a measurement. You can:
- Click on the 'x' in the measurement menu.
- Press the ESC key on your keyboard.
- Select the 'Home' button.
- Select the Measurement tool again.
Note: You can only create one measurement at a time; if you select the Measurement tool again, the original measurement will be cleared:
Note: Measurements, by default, are temporary; Measurements are not saved when you exit the model. Measurements are also specific to users. If two users are viewing the same Model, they will not see each other's measurements.
